It was only a short time before older generations caught on to the lightweight and comfortable appeal of the sneakers. In the 90s and the early 2000s, the adidas Samba was one of the most popular pairs of sneakers, sought after by all those playing indoor soccer and even those who just wanted to be a part of the “it” fashion at the time. Later, they entered the womenswear market and started coming out in many new colourways. Having been designed a year before the 1950 FIFA World Cup, which was being held in Brazil that year, Dassler decided that the name should have a personal connection to Brazil’s rich traditions, so he named the sneakers after the Brazilian dance and music genre.įrom there, it didn’t take long before the sneakers became a beloved sportswear product. This next part is something that I actually didn’t know before researching this, and that is why the sneakers were named “Samba” in the first place. The gum sole was explicitly used to allow soccer player and athlete alike to play their sport no matter the state of the field, whether hard, soft, dry or icy. The sneakers were initially made in all black, with the brand’s classic three stripes in a contrasting white and the gum sole that we associate with the sneaker.
